Have you been closely following the careers of the likes of Brian Shaw, Eddie Hall, Zydrunas Savickas, and Hafpor Julius Bjornsson aka The Mountain? Do you watch with awe each year as these absolute beasts compete in lifting and strength challenges that would tear lesser men apart? If so, you might just be interested in getting into the world of Strongman yourself? But how do you actually transfer your skills at the squat rack or dead-lifting at the gym, to squatting a car or lifting those iconic Atlas Stones?
It probably seems like a mammoth task to get into the world of strongman. The giant you see on TV are performing almost impossible feats of strength, where do you even start on your journey to becoming even a novice strongman. Well, whilst there is no doubt strongman competitions are not for the faint-hearted, you can get into training for such competition at your own gym, to find out if it is something you really want to try.
If you want to become a strongman, you have to train like one, which involves developing a wide range of skills that you will need in competitions. You may not have the necessary equipment at your gyms such as huge atlas or tombstones to lift, or a car to drag, but that doesn't mean you cannot get your training started. For example, even if your gym does not have stones or logs to lift, sandbags make for a perfect tool for building the core stability and the kind of carrying strength needed in strongman.
Grip strength is also a key skill for a strong man, so it is probably a good idea to invest in a pair of thick grips, they will come in really useful. Furthermore, you can build your grip strength using just your own body weight and an old towel, with some handle towel pull-ups. These are just some simple examples of how you can start in some strongman training. Speak to one of the trainers at your gym and see if you can come up with a Strongman training program together that will build strength in the key event categories: Overhead Press, Deadlift, and Loaded Carries.
If you decide that you want to go further on your strongman journey and want to go on into entering into competitions, it is advised that you find a coach. With a coach that specialises in strongman training, you will have access to suitable equipment and someone who can teach you the right techniques. Even if there is not a gym near you that specialises in strongman training, there is sure to be a CrossFit gym, which is likely to have some useful equipment. Additionally, utilise the internet as it is a great resource for training videos and eating guides.
